What is reading workshop?
Reading workshop is made up of three components. 1. Mini-lesson - I will spend about 10 to 15 minutes teaching you a reading strategy to help you become an even better reader.
2. Individual reading - You will read books of your choice on your reading level for about 20 to 30 minutes. You will practice the reading strategy I taught in the mini-lesson.
3. Closing - During the last five minutes of reading workshop, we will discuss and share the reading strategy we learned about that day.

Teacher, help!! I need you!!!
If Mrs. Burnett is working with a student at the kidney table and you need her, what do you do?
Bathroom 911 - If you have a bathroom emergency and can't wait until Mrs. Burnett is finished working with a student, you need to walk to the kidney table with your thumb up. Wait for Mrs. Burnett to acknowledge you before you go to the restroom.
Blood - If you have a nose bleed - Get a Kleenex to stop the blood. Then, go to Mrs. Burnett and wait for her to acknowledge you before going to the restroom. If you have a cut - Get a band aid from under the sink.
Vomit - If you feel like you might vomit, go directly to the restroom.

How will conferring help me as a reader?
1.Mrs. Burnett will listen to me read aloud.
2.Talk about the book
3. Mrs. Burnett will teach me something that I need based on # 1 & 2.
The conference will last about 10 – 15 minutes.

How do I pick a "Just Right" book?
Use the 5 Finger strategy. Read one page from the chapter book. Count how many words you do not know. If you reach five or more, the book is probably too hard. You might want to try another book.
